With all the excitement of Elon and the Tesla Model X let us take a moment and remember there is a more beautiful Model X that appeared almost 100 years ago.

Well, 88 years ago- I've discovered that 12 years can make a surprisingly big difference in the early days of the car.
For example, here's a 1914 Packard 4-48 roadster, 'boss of the road' - not quite as super-car like as the Duesenberg in its day, but very close at $4,480 to $6,100 a pop
Bit of a different beasty: wooden artillery wheels, acetylene lamps on the cowl, brass everywhere, I suspect it won't have front brakes. You can tell it was very advanced by the fact that it had any electric lighting at all, and even *gasp* an electric starter.

My pre-planned mid life crisis involves Duesenberg replica acquisition. I still can't believe my grandparents sold my grandma's when she stopped driving, but I think it has to do with the fact that it would tantalize her to go drive it constantly if it had stayed around. It was always her dream car growing up. I'm glad she got to own one in a way.

100 might have been a bit of a stretch considering the development of technology. The brass era cars were mechanical perfection.

Your grandma owned a Duesenberg? That's amazing.

Just a replica, but a very good one. They built them in Wisconsin. It was still demonstrably great, like a touch of the past. One of these.

I would totally think that Duesy is real. I had no idea any replicas were made.

They were really solid. Some other folks tried to do it in 2011 but they couldn't get enough cash going. Maybe now in the era of crowdfunding somebody will try again. I'd certainly chip in, though I can't exactly afford a full replica yet.

I'd be worried they'd mess it up or saturate to market. But then again I wouldn't mind buying a replica of what is perhaps the greatest American car.

Seen in pictures with no description, so I had no idea what it was.

Jay Leno owns one and he has a good review of it on his website. If you got a few minutes it's worth a watch.
